Effective amateurism

One Zhihu user coined the term ‘effective exegesis’ in light of effective theory, a scientific theory without implication that the mechanism used by the theory has a direct counterpart in the actual causes. Actually what amateurs in linguistics do is not ‘theory’ but construction, so it would better be called ‘effective amateurism’. Is it the only way for amateurism?
